Indian Actor Darshan Seeks TV Access Behind Bars
The ongoing Renukaswamy murder case took another turn yesterday as prominent Indian actor Darshan and his co-accused made an unusual request to the Bengaluru court: permission to have a television installed in their jail cells.
Accused Claim Mental Health Concerns
During the December 3rd hearing conducted via video conference, all accused persons jointly submitted their request for television access. They argued that prolonged incarceration was negatively affecting their mental well-being and that television would help them cope with jail conditions.
The presiding judge responded cautiously, stating that instructions would be issued to the Jail Superintendent before any decision would be made. The court made clear that such requests must follow established jail regulations and administrative protocols.
This latest request follows previous attempts by Darshan to secure basic comforts during his detention. Earlier approved requests included a bedsheet, pillow, and regular walking time. However, the court had already rejected his plea for home-cooked meals.
Key Witnesses Summoned
The hearing saw significant procedural developments with the court issuing summons to crucial witnesses. Renukaswamy's parents have been directed to appear as witnesses, along with the watchman who initially filed the complaint.
Three individuals in total received summons, including both of the victim's parents and the complainant watchman. The court also summoned witnesses numbered 7 and 8 from the charge sheet, with the defense requesting strict adherence to the listed examination sequence.
Custody Transfer Requests Denied
The court disposed of several transfer applications during the proceedings. Accused Jagadish sought transfer to Chitradurga jail citing personal reasons, while co-accused Anukumar requested the same transfer due to his mother's reported ill health.
Both requests were firmly rejected. The judge emphasized that custody stability remains essential during the witness examination phase and that transfers cannot be permitted until key eyewitnesses have been heard.
Disciplined Legal Process
Throughout the hearing, Darshan maintained a subdued presence, standing with folded hands while listening to proceedings through video conference. He made no detailed personal submissions, allowing his legal counsel to present arguments on his behalf.
The case has attracted considerable public attention due to the involvement of a high-profile film personality and the serious nature of the murder charges. The court has consistently prioritized procedural discipline over custodial comfort requests.
