Supermarket Own-Brand Baked Beans Beat Heinz in Taste Test
In a recent blind taste test conducted by the consumer watchdog Which?, two supermarket own-brand baked beans have outperformed the market leader Heinz, proving that quality does not always come with a high price tag. The study, which involved 60 panelists rating 12 varieties, found that Aldi and Lidl's offerings tied for first place with a score of 77%, beating Heinz's 76% while costing more than three times less.
At just 39p per can, Aldi's Bramwells beans were praised for their texture and sweetness, earning a Best Buy and Great Value award from Which?. Lidl's Newgate beans, at 40p, also received these accolades. In contrast, Heinz Beanz, at £1.40 for a 415g tin, was noted as the 'most expensive' option, though it can be found cheaper in multipacks or offers.
Other brands like Branston, Asda, and Sainsbury's placed third, fourth, and fifth respectively, while M&S's own-brand failed to impress, described as 'dull-looking' and lacking flavor. The Co-Op fared worst, with two-thirds of panelists finding their flavor too weak.
Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, commented: 'Our taste test shows that you don't have to compromise on flavour by ditching the pricier brands and choosing supermarket own-label beans - a switch that could save over £100 a year.'
This result underscores a broader lesson for consumers: brand loyalty can sometimes blind us to better value. For Batswana families, it is a reminder to prioritize quality and cost-effectiveness over marketing hype, especially in times of economic pressure. Supporting local industries and making wise choices at the till are values that align with conservative principles of fiscal responsibility and self-reliance.
