Tragic M1 Crash Claims Lives of Young Couple, Inquest Finds
An inquest in Sheffield has ruled that a young couple with bright futures ahead of them died from injuries sustained in a high-speed motorway collision last November. The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of excessive speed on our roads.
What happened in the M1 crash?
Umar Akhbar, 23, was driving a grey BMW 335D on the M1 near Barnsley on 13 November when he lost control of the vehicle. The car veered across three lanes of the motorway and the hard shoulder before striking a tree. His passenger, Aiza Nageen, 24, was in the front seat at the time of the crash.
Assistant Sheffield Coroner Hannah Berry concluded that both young people died from injuries caused in the collision. Emergency services pronounced them dead shortly after arriving at the scene.
What did the investigation reveal?
Victoria Brock, a forensic collision investigator, told the inquest that motorway cameras showed the BMW passing an HGV just before the Hoyland sliproad. The vehicle, travelling from Leeds, lost directional control immediately before the collision. The HGV driver stopped and called 999 upon witnessing the car leave the road.
While the exact speed could not be determined, the court heard the vehicle was certainly exceeding the speed limit. Brock noted that the extreme damage to the car indicated a high-speed impact. The road surface was in good condition with no standing water present.
The coroner stated that an incorrectly fitted nearside wheel was exacerbated by the speed of the car, and that damp conditions combined with the speed of the vehicle caused it to travel across the road and lose directional control.
Were alcohol or mobile phones a factor?
Toxicology reports showed no evidence of alcohol in either person's system, and mobile phone use was ruled out. However, the coroner noted that Akhbar had been suffering knee and ankle pain from a football injury and had spoken to his GP about it that week. This could not be ruled out as a contributory factor, though it was not identified in the post-mortem examination.

Gul Akhbar described his nephew, a sales assistant from Burngreave, as an athletic and sporty young man and a fantastic lad who loved football. He called the couple's death a tragic, devastating loss to the families of two young people with their whole futures ahead of them.
Aisha Nageen paid tribute to her sister, the youngest of three, who worked as an admin clerk after studying nursing at university. She described her as one in a million, remarkably wise beyond her years, and exceptionally loyal and selfless.
She was one in a million. Deeply-loved with so much life ahead of her, she still had so much love to give.
Coroner Berry told the families she was very, very sorry these two young people had died too early.
