Bangladesh's Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Remains in Critical Condition
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former premier Khaleda Zia continues to battle serious health complications, with medical experts expressing concerns about her deteriorating condition. The 80-year-old political veteran remains hospitalized in Dhaka, where she has been receiving intensive care since November 23.
Zia was initially admitted to a private medical facility after developing a severe chest infection that subsequently affected both her heart and lungs. Her condition has since worsened, prompting doctors to transfer her to the coronary care unit four days after her initial admission.
International Medical Consultation Sought
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed during a press conference that Zia remains "seriously ill." Medical professionals have indicated that overseas treatment may be necessary, though her current physical state prevents international travel.
"The physicians said she may require treatment abroad, but her current physical condition does not permit overseas travel. Doctors will reconsider the matter only if her condition stabilizes," Alamgir stated.
The former prime minister is currently under the care of leading Bangladeshi medical professionals, with additional consultation from specialists at Johns Hopkins in the United States and the London Clinic in the United Kingdom. A Chinese medical team has also expressed interest in traveling to Bangladesh to assist in her treatment.
National Leaders Express Concern
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has publicly expressed deep concern over Zia's health, calling upon citizens to pray for her recovery. "At this crucial juncture in the country's democratic transition, I convey my heartfelt wishes for the early recovery of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia," the president said in an official statement.
Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus has been closely monitoring the situation, holding special prayer meetings with his advisory council for Zia's recovery.
Complex Medical History
The BNP chairperson has been managing multiple health complications for years, including liver and kidney issues, diabetes, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses. Earlier this year, she returned to Bangladesh in May after spending four months in London receiving advanced medical treatment.
Zia, widow of slain Bangladesh president Ziaur Rahman, has been a central figure in the country's political landscape for decades. Her son Tarique Rahman, who serves as BNP's acting chairman, has been residing in London since 2008.
Political Implications
The BNP has emerged as a significant force in Bangladesh's evolving political environment following the dramatic change in government in August 2024. The party's position has strengthened considerably after student-led protests resulted in the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League administration.
Despite party requests to avoid crowding the hospital, numerous BNP supporters have gathered outside the medical facility seeking updates on their leader's condition. The party has organized special prayers at mosques across Bangladesh for Zia's recovery.
Major General (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar, Zia's security affairs adviser, provided a cautiously optimistic update, noting that her condition had "improved a bit," while confirming that arrangements for overseas treatment would be made if she becomes fit for travel.
