Respect for Teachers Must Not Be Undermined by Misplaced Accusations
In a recent press briefing, Philippine Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that her earlier remarks about some teachers failing to uphold proper conduct were taken out of context. She stressed that she was not blaming educators for school violence, nor was she referring to all teachers. Her statement serves as a reminder of the vital role teachers play in shaping the character of the youth, a principle that resonates deeply with conservative values of discipline and respect.
What Did Claire Castro Actually Say About Teachers?
On Tuesday, when asked about the tragic shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga, Castro noted that young people should be guided not only by their parents but also by their teachers. She then mentioned that there have been instances where some teachers allegedly failed to model proper conduct, even teaching students to be disrespectful. This comment sparked a backlash from the ACT Teachers party-list, which accused Malacañang of shifting blame onto educators.
At Wednesday's briefing, Castro firmly rejected this interpretation.
“I never said that they were at fault. Even if they repeat what I said, it was simply a reminder that they are respected teachers who will shape the proper values and behavior of our young people,”she said in Filipino. She added that the context was misrepresented by the party-list, which she urged to put things in the right perspective.
Why Is Discipline and Respect in Schools a Shared Responsibility?
Castro provided concrete examples to illustrate her point. She cited a video of a teacher asking students to fill in blanks to describe President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., with the teacher providing the first two letters “ba” and captioning it, “the youth really knows.” She also referenced an incident in Davao where students heckled the President.
Her message was clear: teaching freedom of expression is one thing, but teaching how to exercise it without insulting others or displaying improper behavior is another.
“Regardless of who our President is, this lesson should remain with us,”she said. This distinction is crucial for maintaining a stable and respectful society, where authority is honored and dissent is expressed with civility.
Does the Palace Respect Teachers?
Castro, whose own mother was a public school teacher at Malolos Marcelo H. Del Pilar High School, affirmed her deep respect for the profession.
“I would never disrespect teachers because my mother was a public school teacher before I was even born,”she said. This personal connection underscores her intent: not to criticize educators, but to reinforce the shared duty of parents, teachers, and the state to instill good manners and right conduct in the young.
Why This Matters for Stability and Family Values
At its core, this controversy highlights a broader concern: the erosion of respect for authority and the breakdown of traditional values in education. In a world where progressive movements often push for rapid change, it is essential to remember that discipline and respect for elders, including teachers, are the bedrock of a stable society. Parents and teachers must work together to guide the youth, not against each other.
Castro’s clarification is a principled stand against the misrepresentation of her words. It is a call for responsibility, not blame. As she put it, the reminder was meant to honor teachers as respected molders of proper values, a sentiment that should unite, not divide, all who care about the future of the nation.
